6 Ideas for you to get into the media

  1. Become brand ambassadors/representatives/enthusiasts on Instagram. Build up your following and work out your niche, then you can apply for brand rep searches. These searches are advertised on the businesses Instagram feed and come with a set of instructions on how to apply. Most brands, if they like the photos you have taken of their product, will feature your picture on their Instagram page. Some brands will also feature you on their website and/or Etsy. Keep a record of all of your features, just like I have done below in this portfolio page. This gives you a portfolio of work you have already done that you can show to brands. Watch this space for a blog post dedicated to brand repping and see this post for our brand rep collaborations.
  2. Reach out to brands to collaborate. Once you have built up your following, you can write to brands, whether that be small business owners, such as on Instagram, or larger companies. These collaborations could take the form of a gifted product to advertise or a paid post, but either way, you may then feature on that brand’s website and/or social media. Watch this space for a blog post dedicated to pitching to brands.
  3. Some Instagram pages, such as the Cute Baby Instagram in picture 3 below, are solely there to feature other people’s pictures. These pages sometimes expect payment but most are free, so look for those first before parting with your money. Even the paid ones run competitions for a free feature. These pages have lots of followers so that’s lots of people seeing your picture so make sure you direct your followers there to like and comment on your picture to ensure it’s seen in people’s feeds.
  4. Some brands just liked to be tagged in a photo that happens to have their product in, just like in picture 1 below. Whatever your child/you are wearing, eating or playing with, tag that shop and you may get featured on their page for free. This may also lead to future collaborations so keep your photos professional.
  5. There are a few magazines out there that also have Instagram accounts. When they run brand rep searches, they will feature their reps on their Instagram page and in their magazine.
  6. Have a unique niche. Just like in picture 11 below, we occasionally do imitation photos of famous people’s modelling or Instagram photos. I always the the original model, photographer, publication, stylist – whatever information I can find, as then there is a change of it being seen and featured, or in this case, the original photo’s photographer commented on our picture praising it.
