Some of you may know just how partial I am to a mum hack (full blog post coming soon for even more mum hacks – send me some of yours on the comments form and I’ll tag your blog and feature the best ones). I am in to anything that makes my life easier, better and saves me time and/or money. Most of the mum hacks I have showed you so far have been other products I have changed into something new (inspired by the Ikea hack), substituted for cheaper versions or updates of the original version (see our Pinterest for ideas). But every so often something comes along that is a major mum hack in its own right. This, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, drum roll please …….. is the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine (I guess the surprise element is lost given the fact I’ve titled the blog post – sort of gives it away….anyhoo…)

Oh why didn’t we discover the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine earlier?

This is genius. Check out our YouTube video (or on our blog here) demonstrating what happens when you haven’t got one, and just how amazing it all is when you do!

I breastfed/pumped for Ava for the first 3 months exclusively. I pumped for Geoff to feed her one bottle last thing before bed. This gave me a little extra sleep, got her used to bottles early on and he got to bond while feeding. But at 3 months, I got fed up of pumping as it was time consuming, tiring, boring and as only 1 boob worked, it was very hard work! So Ava’s 1 bottle became formula and that’s how we stayed until 10 months when she dropped breastfeeding herself and wanted exclusively bottle. We are now on this journey with Rafe but he’s still very much a boob monster.

For the first 2 months of formula feeding we Googled what to do – there had to be a better way of getting through the agonising wait for the kettle to boil, then for the bottle to cool, all while your child is screaming. There had to be a solution that didn’t involve the ‘judgey’ mums telling you you’re harming your child by making the formula in advance – but you still had to wait for it to heat up – and the ‘judgey’ mums are still watching you to check you’re not microwaving. There had to be an alternative to having a mini kitchen in your bedroom (fridge, bottle warmer (A.K.A microwave, ssshhh). And who can afford to keep buying the ready made bottles for the middle of the night – and they still need warming too! AAAHHHH.

But then, on one amazing day, we discovered what we like to call the MAGIC MILK MAKER! Gone are the days (and nights…oh the nights!) of waiting for the heating up and then the cooling down while trying to stop your baby from crying. Gone is the hissing at each other under each others’ breath that it’s definitely their turn. Gone is the sole destroying moment when the perfect, sweated over, much antipicated bottle is finally drinkable, and the baby falls asleep within moments of putting it in their mouths. You could already feel the eyes of the ‘judgey’ mums watching you to make sure you poured it down the sink rather than put it back in the fridge. (Perhaps I should stop inviting them over to sit in my kitchen in the middle of the night…)

The Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine does exactly what it says on the tin. A bottle made perfectly and safely, in no time at all, at the perfect temperature for drinking. Oh why didn’t we discover this earlier?!

Getting started with the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine

Having followed the instructions for the initial clean and new filter prep, we inserted the filter and filled up the water. It is strictly recommended that you use the Tommee Tippee filters meant for this machine as using other filters does not clean the water properly. The machine tells you when the filter needs replacing as well as displaying other LED warning lights for things like low water level and cleaning mode.

The magic bit:

Adjust the drip tray to the correct height of your bottle and put bottle on it (you get given 1 bottle with the machine). Turn the dial to the correct amount of ounces. We are currently on 6. The lowest it can do is 4 ounces as any lower, the machine wouldn’t be able to optimise the perfect hot shot to body temperature water ratio. Press the big button. A hot shot of water goes into the bottle. This magic bit of water is the correct temperature to kill any bacteria in the milk powder and to help dissolve the powder once added. The machine then beeps to say it’s time to add the powder. This bit is time sensitive as the machine recognises that if you take too long the hot shot will no longer be hot enough so it shuts down and you have to start again. It is easy to get to distracted when you’ve got 2 kids running around but eyes on the prize. Add the powder (6 for us as that’s how many ounces we turned the dial to at the start) and shake (with the lid on obvs…don’t do what Geoff did once out of middle of the night tiredness…). Also, does anyone else have to count the scoops out loud because counting is bloody hard work at 2am? No? Just us then… Place the bottle back under the machine and press the button.

This time the amount of water that comes out fills it up to the amount of ounces you’ve asked for and makes the whole bottle body temperature – the perfect temperature for drinking! All in a matter of minutes. As Craig Revel Horwood would say – A-MA-ZING! Every 2 days clear the water out and give it a wipe round and you’re magic milk maker is your new best friend. Sorry Geoff, not sure I need you any more either love.

Now now, I know this information has made some of you cry at the thought of missing out on this for so long, but not to worry – you know now, so pop out to get one. The good news is we’ve got the old model, but if you went to buy one now, you’d get the new one, which looks amazing and has some great updated features. The beep I mentioned earlier is astonishingly loud in the middle of the night, but on the new model, you can turn it down. And no more turning on the lights and blinding yourself at 2am, the new model has LED lights to light the way. Hmm…even I’m a little jealous of you all.
